An out of print Rainer Werner Fassbinder biopic, made two years after his death starring his frequent collaborator Eva Mattes in drag as Fassbinder.
A bearded director named EVA, a fictive Rainer Werner Fassbinder, lives in a large house with his cast and crew as he films Dumas’ Lady of the Camellias. His accountant informs him he has many unpaid bills and little cash on hand. EVA throws a fit and fires him. He then proceeds to play one person off against another, dismiss with cruelty his recent lover Ali, sleep openly with his leading lady Gudrun, and make a direct and public play for his leading man, Walter. He’s mercurial, dictatorial, and manic. Will he finish the film, having drawn great performances from his actors through his manipulations, or will his antics set events in motion that spin out of his control?

Long before LOVE, SIMON and CALL ME BY YOUR NAME became common fare at the multiplex, the only places gay men could see their lives and lusts depicted on screen was at their local “all-male” adult cinema. From coming out stories to romances, from bizarro horror to camp comedies, the hundreds of films churned out by the gay adult film industry throughout the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s were a driving force behind the growth of gay culture and constitute a largely forgotten cinematic document. A video companion to the Artforum “Best of 2018” Instagram feed of the same name, ASK ANY BUDDY compiles fragments from over 125 movies to create a kaleidoscopic snapshot of the era. With rare footage shot at dozens of real, legendary, and long since demolished queer cruising spots and social spaces, ASK ANY BUDDY is a funny, sexy portrait of urban gay life in the years following the Stonewall Riots—or at least how it looked in the movies.
A kaleidoscopic snapshot of urban gay life during the gay liberation era — or at least how it looked in the movies.

The Playland Café, Boston’s oldest gay bar, was established in 1937 and was a vital queer hub in the city until 1998, when rampant ‘urban renewal’ projects led to its closure. Demolished but never forgotten, it acted as a meeting ground for an exceptionally diverse crowd — throughout its lifespan, it featured acts from drag performances to DJ sets and was connected to Pride rallies and underground gay newspapers. As a gathering place for outsiders, it was also a target for police raids and zoning. Artist-filmmaker Georden West’s debut feature is an expressionist and very queer bricolage, focusing on an atemporal night in the renowned Playland Café. Following its employees and others who have haunted the space, weaving together a tapestry of personal and community anecdotes across the bar’s existence.
