Jack Smith was a flamboyant gay performance artist and outrageous and eccentric underground filmmaker best known for his film FLAMING CREATURES. “He has attained for the first time in motion pictures a high level of art which is absolutely lacking in decorum; and a treatment of sex which makes us aware of the restraint of all previous filmmakers.” (Film Culture)

Flaming Creatures

CONTENT WARNING:
Filmmaker and artist Jack Smith described his own film as a “comedy set in a haunted movie studio.” Flaming Creatures begins humorously enough with several men and women, mostly of indeterminate gender, vamping it up in front of the camera and participating in a mock advertisement for an indelible, heart-shaped brand of lipstick. However, things take a dark, nightmarish turn when a transvestite chases, catches and begins molesting a woman. Soon, all of the titular “creatures” participate in a (mostly clothed) orgy that causes a massive earthquake.

Blonde Cobra

CONTENT WARNING:
A man fondles objects, looks at himself in the mirror, poses in different clothes, smiles and makes faces at the camera while his voice on the soundtrack speaks of his despair, makes impressionistic statements and little songs, quotes Greta Garbo and Maria Montez, tells the story of a lonely little boy and tells the story of a woman named Madame Nescience who dreams of herself as the Mother Superior of a convent of sexual perversion.

The identical twin Kinney Brothers return with a surreal horror story about three individuals caught in a struggle to survive in the rural Midwest of the early 1960s. This contemporary American folk tale explores the complex terrain of gay subjectivity and the cultural parameters of sexual behavior, possession and the law.
Demons is a dramatic horror story set in the rural Midwest in the late 1950's. The narrative focuses on Allie, a recently widowed woman struggling to operate a small hog farm with the support of her teenage son, Dayton. Allie's autonomy is repeatedly challenged as she staves off the vulturous opportunism of a corporate land prospector and the debts her husband left behind. In the midst of her difficulties arrives her brother-in-law, Gray, returning to the farm he fled fifteen years earlier. A suspect individual with rumors of mental illness in his past, Gray's attempts to insinuate himself back on the farm are repeatedly thwarted by Allie. Circumstances begin to knot as Gray pursues Dayton who reciprocates with the full passion of his burgeoning sexuality. In desperation, Allie devises a plan to circumvent the desire between Gray and Dayton; an effort as much to maintain control of her son as the land she tenuously possesses. Demons is a story of three individuals caught in the struggle to survive; fighting for their own autonomy and the often competing strength of sexual desire.
