CONTENT WARNING:
Reno Finds Her Mom,” a filmed account of comedian Reno’s real-life, emotionally charged search for her birth mother, is an awkward blend of drama and comedy.
This film is presented in English with English subtitles.
In this documentary, out lesbian Reno, an oddball comedian and stream-of-consciousness performer, takes us on a search for her birth mother. Reno was adopted into a suburbanite all-American family, where she always knew she was different. The camera captures Reno's quest, complete with her ups, downs, and tantrums. Her journey is assisted by her loving friends. Included are depictions of Reno's fantasies and nightmares, featuring Lily Tomlin as her fairy godmother and Mary Tyler Moore as her mother. Reno herself gives the performance of her life as she uses her detective powers to solve the mystery of her birth. This is an adventure not to be missed.

The Real Ellen Story by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato (1998, 52 min.) tells the behind-the-scenes story of the outing of Ellen DeGeneres. It traces the famous coming-out episode that 42 million Americans tuned in to. Candid interviews with Ellen, her partner, Anne Heche; her mother Betty; her brother; the show's writers; a former Disney executive; and gay and lesbian activists emphasize the impact this show had on people around the world. Find out, among other things, why the episode was code-named by the network The Puppy Episode. Off the Straight and Narrow by Katherine Sender (1998, 63 min.) is a comprehensive history of gay, lesbian, and bisexual representation on American television. It travels from the near invisibili- ty of gays and lesbians before the '70's to the reportage of AIDS in the '90's. Clips from famous gay and lesbian moments in television history are used in this intriguing documentary to investigate media representations and to challenge stereotypes.
The Real Ellen Story is an in-depth documentary detailing the story behind the historic “coming-out” episode of Ellen. The program takes a unique behind-the-scenes approach in encapsulating the time-line detailing the conception of the episode, the rumours, the controversy and Ellen DeGeneres’ own declaration in Time magazine.

Better Than Chocolate

FREE

Fri, May 21 @ 8:00 pm
Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

Winner of the People's Choice Award at the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. Set in Vancouver, this delightful and very sexy new lesbian feature is a rollicking tale centering around the pretty 19-year-old bookstore clerk Maggie, and her diverse circle of friends and family. Maggie's life has been going great, especially since meeting Kim, an itinerant artist. They fall for each other hard and fast enjoying art, sex and chocolate. The only problem is that Maggie's recently divorced mother, Lila, has decided to move in. Then there is the transexual Judy who befriends Lila and is in love with Frances the lesbian bookstore owner who is fighting customs over banned books. A great soundtrack including artists like Bif Naked, Ani DiFranco, and Sara McLachlan all lend to the humor and romance of this "sexy, funny, touching and always generous" romantic comedy" (David Stratton, Variety). A reception follows screening. Special thanks to the Canadian Consulate General.
Not long after moving into her own place, Maggie finds herself with two unsolicited roommates: her recently divorced mother, Lila, and her young brother. The timing is especially bad, considering Maggie has fallen hard for an attractive woman, Kim, only hours before they move in. What could be a nonissue becomes increasingly complicated – since Maggie’s family is unaware of her sexual orientation, and Maggie is not open to sharing that information.
