Murat, a Turkish gay youth living in Berlin’s Turkish ghetto, decides to come out to his family. What he doesn’t know yet is that his family has even bigger secrets to hide.
Best Feature winner at the New Festival in New York, Ataman's rich film presents a complex web of relationships. Living under the tyrannical influence of his older brother, the teenaged, closeted Murat ventures into the Berlin night and discovers a gritty Turkish subculture of transvestites and hustlers. In this urban demi-monde reigns the glittering drag queen and kindred spirit Lola, shadowed by his über-macho boyfriend Bili. As the characters weave in and out of each other's lives, their tragic drama unfolds. A closely guarded secret and the multiple layers of deception surrounding it create a hauntingly beautiful web in this "impeccably acted and directed" film (Elliot Stein, Village Voice).
