CONTENT WARNING:

Thirty-year-old Hlynur still lives with his mother and spends his days drinking, watching porn and surfing the net while living off unemployment checks. A girl is interested in him, but he stands back from commitment. His mother’s Spanish flamenco teacher, Lola, moves in with them for Christmas. On New Year’s Eve, while his mother is away, Hlynur finds out Lola is a lesbian, but also ends up having sex with her. He soon finds out he and his mother are sharing more than a house. Eventually he must find out where he fits into the puzzle, and how to live life less selfishly.

This film is presented in Icelandic with English subtitles.

In this zany black comedy about social confusion and youth culture in modern Iceland, 28-year-old slacker Hlynur has a passionate one-night stand with a beautiful Spanish woman (played by legendary Spanish actress Victoria Abril), only to discover that she is his mother’s lesbian lover and, worse, that she may be pregnant with his baby. This bitingly funny Almodóvar-style film is at heart a touching story of familial love. In Icelandic with English subtitles.

Director Susan Seidelman (Desperately Seeking Susan) describes her film as a “gender bending detective story about alternative families.” Shot in Barcelona with a star-studded cast that includes Judy Davis, Marcia Gay Harden, Lili Taylor, and Juliette Lewis, this flamboyant comedy tells the story of Cassandra, an American translator living in Barcelona. Cassandra is struggling with the translation of a novel and in need of cash when femme fatale Frankie Stevens persuades her to play private eye. As Cassandra attempts to find Frankie’s missing husband, she quickly discovers that looks can be deceiving. In English.

Barcelona hasn’t turned out to be the romantic dreamland fledgling translator Cassandra thought it would be. She’s about to return to America when the mysterious Frankie offers her a large sum of money to track down Frankie’s missing lover.
